Implementation of an environmental, health and safety management system

In 2009 Siemens VAI Metals Technologies GmbH, one of world’s leading life-cycle partner for the metallurgical industry with headquarter in Linz, Upper Austria, decided to implement an integrated management system (IMS) including environmental and health and safety issues (EHS). The IMS should be certified according to the international ISO 14001 and BS OHSAS 18001 standards.

What was the challange?

The IMS had to be developed in way that assured a sustainable approach to environmental protection and health and safety management rather than just achieving a certificate. Also the system had to set standards which could be later implemented in all regional offices around the world.

What has been done?

For the implementation of the IMS within Siemens VAI Metal Technologies on a global scale we used a multiple stage approach:

3 IMS implementation pilot projects in stage 1 covered the headquarter in Linz, Austria and thus all business related processes, an office location and a production facility in Germany and were successfully awarded certification according to ISO 14001 and BS OHSAS 18001. During stage 1 tools such as a legal compliance database, an EHS self-assessment tool and a risk management tool were developed.

Based on this experience denkstatt supported the roll out and adaptation of the IMS to the Siemens VAI Metal Technologies offices and manufacturing facilities in Germany, India, Brazil, the United Kingdom.

What was the benefit?

The benefits of the implementation of new management systems for environment, health and safety can be divided into advantages for employees and for the organisation (see table).
In addition to environmental protection, improvement of health and reduction of number of accidents the main drivers for the implementation were the reduction of all liability risks for personnel and organisation as well the fulfilment of customer demands.

Advantages for employees and organisation
