Wooden ice-crem sticks: Life Cycle Assessment and Carbon Footprint Assessment

Following the sustainability path of the group and its partners, Carpat Sticks decided to analyze the LCA impacts and the carbon footprint of its main types of wooden ice cream sticks produced in the Timisoara factory.

Carpat Sticks, member of Euro Sticks group is producing wooden ice-cream sticks for Romanian and European market. Following the sustainability path of the group and its partners, Carpat Sticks decided to analyze the LCA impacts and the carbon footprint of its main types of wooden ice cream sticks produced in the Timisoara factory.

What was the challenge?

Analyzing a wood based product, the main challenges of the project was to determine the CO2 quantity sequestrated in the product, the period of sequestration and the influence of sustainable foresting on the considered system.

What has been done?

The project followed a cradle-to-gate approach and stared with the determination of the product-system to be analyzed. Working in a close cooperation with the customer, denkstatt realized data inventory questionnaires and developed a modeling tool to quantify and analyze the environmental impacts of all relevant activities and materials.

What was the concrete benefit?

The CFP modeling tool realized during the project allowed the client to identify the CO2 intensive activities and materials, offering also the possibility to visualize the impacts on the CO2 balance of different changes of process or auxiliary materials. The project realized more than just a quantification of the CO2 but enabled the client to use the modeling tool as a strategic planning instrument.

Feedback of Carpat Sticks Romania

“The project helped us to understand better the environmental impacts of our activities and products and offered a clear image on our CO2 footprint. The results of the project are used as starting points for future improvements.”
